![]() ![]() ![]() As Zax writes in the liner notes, “If we’re still thinking and arguing and opining about the meaning of Woodstock after half a century, shouldn’t we at least have a set of baseline facts about what happened there?” The result is the limited edition 38-CD set Woodstock – Back to the Garden: The Definitive 50th Anniversary Archive. With the festival’s 50th anniversary, producers Andy Zax and Brian Kehew made the case that this was the time to set the record straight and get it right. The truth about what happened on Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in upstate New York is vastly more interesting than the myth, but for years, there was no counter-argument available. Partly to blame are both Michael Wadleigh’s 1970 documentary film and the accompanying triple-LP soundtrack, which multiple generations of fans encountered through… 5.1 GB 320 ** FLAC …older relatives or at midnight showings at revival houses. Moments from the three-day concert have crystallized as symbols of the era, with details like Richie Havens’ acoustic prayer for freedom, Roger Daltrey’s fringed leather vest, or Jimi Hendrix’s “Star Spangled Banner” held up as sacred countercultural relics. The festival is the ultimate expression of the 1960s. ![]() The mythological status of 1969’s Woodstock Music and Arts Festival can sometimes feel overpowering. Elsewhere, In This Moment are up to some weird, wild, wonderful stuff.THIS ONE? Woodstock 50: Back to the Garden: The Definitive 50th Anniversary Archive (2019) Fifty years after the three-day concert made rock’n’roll history, a gargantuan, 38-disc set attempts to tell the full story of the event for the very first time. At its most conventional (like on the rote, quiet-loud metal-pop of "Whore" ), Blood sounds like R-rated Evanescence - a waste of such devilish talents. Meanwhile, on "11:11," our hostess channels her inner goth-soul princess over gorgeous, wordless harmonies - sort of like Amy Winehouse drowning in a bath of acid. The industrial grind on title track "Blood" is both demented and undeniably catchy, with Brink shrieking, "I'm a dirty, dirty girl" over a souped-up bassline and atmospheric guitar fills. The results are intermittently fascinating: opener "Rise with Me" is a simmering electro-orchestral stunner, with Brink belting some of the most powerful vocals you'll hear all year, regardless of genre. Throughout, producer Kevin Churko helps balance creepy, electro-tinged art-rock and Hot Topic-styled metal-core. In a thoroughly male-dominated genre, she's the real deal - and on Blood, her band's fourth full-length, she's never been more hypnotic. However, it’s something that you’ll end up enjoying regardless.Īfter In This Moment's 2007 debut, the Los Angeles quintet took part in something called the "Hot Chicks of Metal Tour." More recently, Revolver named vocalist Maria Brink one of the "Hot Chicks in Hard Rock." But all that boob-centric press is just a distraction from the band's cathartic and colorful brand of metal, and - in particular - Brink's crotch-punching wonder of a voice. Though sometimes there are traces of generic-driven music, the prevailing sense is that they have enough of their own flavour to be able to be differentiated, albeit the generic leaning means it loses some power in the kick to the viscera. It belongs to the category of albums that grow on you with each listen. Closing ‘11:11’ is rescued from melodrama by a little sense of theatricality. ‘The Blood Legion’ brings in some of aching beauty that can be found in melancholy. ‘Comanche’ has an unbridled aggression and Industrial strip-down feel with some of a most unique flavour to be found here, the most interesting song and best moment of the album for me. ‘From The Ashes’ had some cringy moments towards the end – you just know it’s for the audience to join in during the live gigs, as rather than spontaneous it feels calculated. Some tracks do feel out of way here as ‘It Is Written’ and ‘Aries’ with their sample based – "let’s introduce some ambience here" – which seems to derail the album’s energy rather than supplement it. ‘Whore’ has some great electronically introduced atmosphere, catchy hook that gets under your skin. ![]() ‘Adrenalize’ is great though nothing unexpected, a crowd-pleaser. The album has that Modern Metal feel with its pop-leaning melodies, with a bit of Metalcore thrown into mix, with some interesting ‘spices’ as guitar solo with a twist in ‘Blood’, where there is also a weird feeling regarding its closeness with rap though at the same time it's still not really anywhere near in its vicinity, a ferocious track with some acerbic wit, and a song that has been taken out as a single, unsurprisingly. In This Moment hails from USA’s Los Angeles and has been founded by Maria Brink and Chris Howorth in 2005. Alternative/nu-metal from USA, latest full-length album released in 2012. ![]()
